Attitudes

by Charles Swindoll

"The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life.  Attitude, to me is more important than facts.  It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do.  It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill.  It will make or break a company...a church...a home.  The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day.  We cannot change our past...we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way.  We cannot change the inevitable.  The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude...I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it.  An so it is with you...we are in charge of our ATTITUDES."

Ten Commandments of Human Relations

presented by "Mr. Enthusiasm!"

  1. SPEAK TO PEOPLE.  There is nothing so nice as a cheerful word of greeting.

  2. SMILE AT PEOPLE.  It takes 72 muscles to frown, only 14 to smile.

  3. CALL PEOPLE BY NAME.  The sweetest music to anyone's ears is the sound of his own name.

  4. BE FRIENDLY AND HELPFUL.  If you would have friends, be a friend.

  5. BE CORDIAL.  Speak and act as if everything you do is a genuine pleasure.

  6. BE GENUINELY INTERESTED IN PEOPLE.  You can like almost everybody if you try.

  7. BE GENEROUS with praise-cautious with criticism.

  8. BE CONSIDERATE with the feelings of others.  There are usually three sides to a controversy; Yours,
      the other fellow's, and the right side.

  9. BE ALERT to give service.  What counts most in life is what we do for others.

10. ADD TO THIS a good sense of humor, a big dose of patience and a dash of humility, and you will be
      rewarded many-fold.

Shoulda, Coulda, Woulda...

Too many people put off something that brings them joy just because they haven't thought about it, don't have it on their schedule, didn't know it was coming or are too rigid to depart from their routine.

I got to thinking one day about all those people on the Titanic who passed up dessert at dinner that fateful night in an effort to cut back. From then on, I've tried to be a little more flexible.

How many women out there will eat at home because their husband didn't suggest going out to dinner until after something had been thawed? Does the word 'refrigeration' mean nothing to you?

How often have your kids dropped in to talk and sat in silence while you watched 'Jeopardy' on television?

I cannot count the times I called my sister and said , 'How about going to lunch in a half hour?' She would gas up and stammer, 'I can't. I have clothes on the line. My hair is dirty. I wish I had known yesterday, I had a late breakfast, It looks like rain' And my personal favorite: 'It's Monday.' She died a few years ago. We never did have lunch together.

Because Americans cram so much into their lives, we tend to schedule our headaches.. We live on a sparse diet of promises we make to ourselves when all the conditions are perfect!

We'll go back and visit the grandparents when we get Jr. toilet-trained. We'll entertain when we replace the living-room carpet. We'll go on a second honeymoon when we get two more kids out of college.

Life has a way of accelerating as we get older. The days get shorter, and the list of promises to ourselves gets longer. One morning, we awaken, and all we have to show for our lives is a litany of 'I'm going to,' 'I plan on,' and 'Someday, when things are settled down a bit.'

When anyone calls my 'seize the moment' friend, he is open to adventure and available for trips. He keeps an open mind on new ideas. His enthusiasm for life is contagious. You talk with him for five minutes, and you're ready to trade your bad feet for a pair of Rollerblades and skip an elevator for a bungee cord.

My lips have not touched ice cream in 10 years. I love ice cream. It's just that I might as well apply it directly to my stomach with a spatula and eliminate the digestive process. The other day, I stopped the car and bought a triple-decker. If my car had hit an iceberg on the way home, I would have died happy.

Now...go on and have a nice day. Do something you WANT to...not something on your SHOULD DO list. If you were going to die soon and had only one phone call you could make, who would you call and what would you say? And why are you waiting?

Have you ever watched kids playing on a merry go round or listened to the rain lapping on the ground? Ever followed a butterfly's erratic flight or gazed at the sun into the fading night? Do you run through each day on the fly? When you ask 'How are you?' Do you hear the reply?

When the day is done, do you lie in your bed with the next hundred chores running through your head? Ever told your child, 'We'll do it tomorrow.' And in your haste, not see his sorrow? Ever lost touch? Let a good friendship die? Just call to say 'Hi'?

When you worry and hurry through your day, it is like an unopened gift....Thrown away.... Life is not a race. Take it slower. Hear the music before the song is over.

Live simply, love generously, care deeply, and speak softly.

~~~ Read Me First ~~~
Dear Students and Parents,
How exciting!  Here is our class blog.  Starting next semester we will be using computers to help us learning Chinese.  Before we start, there are a few things I want to coordinate on to make sure we are all on the same page.
We will be using this blog to practice reading, writing, verbal comprehension, and typing.  Whenever you post any of your comments or reponses, please make sure to use your assigned alias or nickname.  These will be provided during the first day of class.
Here are some links to Do's and Don'ts when using the Internet.  Please make sure to take a look at a few of them, if not all, to protect yourself.
Keyboard configuration.  For adding Chinese as one of input option, please follow the steps below.
     1.  Click Start and then Control Panel
     2.  In Control Panel, if you are in Category View, click on Switch
          to Classic View
(top left corner)
     3.  Open Regional and Language Options.
     4.  Click on the Languages tab.
     5.  Under Text services and input languages, click on the Details
          button.
     6.  Under Installed services, click Add.
     7.  In the Add Input Language dialog box, choose the input
          language and keyboard layout or Input Method Editor (IME)
          you want to add.
     8.  Click OK twice. You should now see a language indicator in
          the System Tray (located at bottom right hand corner of the
          desktop by default). You can switch between different input
          languages (= keyboard languages) by pressing the Alt + Shift keys
As usual, should you have any questions or comments, please feel free to let me know.
