丧三年 常悲咽

sāngsānnián chángbēiyè

When our parents pass away, we should honor them by mourning them for three years to show our gratitude and our remembrance.

居處變 酒肉绝

居处变 酒肉绝

jūchùbiàn jiǔròujué

During this period of mourning, we should live simply and not indulge ourselves. For example, we should not feast because our parents can no longer enjoy these foods.

喪盡禮 祭盡誠

丧尽礼 祭尽诚

sāngjìnlǐ jìjìnchéng

When we prepare for our parent's funeral, we should follow custom and tradition. When we pray we should be sincere. When we conduct the funeral rites, we must not be careless.

事死者 如事生

事死者 如事生

shìsǐzhě rúshìshēng

Even though our parents have passed away. We should honor them as if they were still alive in order to show our remembrance of them.

谏不入 悅復谏

jiànbúrù yuèfùjiàn

When our parents committed a crime, we should use a mild manner to dissuade and prevent our parents from making the same mistake again.

號泣隨 撻無怨

号泣隨 撻无怨

hàoqìsuí tàwúyuàn

If words don't work, you should cry to force them to correct their acts. If you are scolded or punished as a result, you should not complain.

親有疾 藥先嘗

亲有疾 药先尝

qīnyǒují yàoxiāncháng

When our parents are sick, we should feed them medicine ourselves and make sure to test the medicine first to check if it is too hot before we let our parents drink it.

晝夜侍 不離床

昼夜侍 不离床

zhòuyèshì bùlíchuáng

Before our parents have recovered, we should stay by them all the time. We should not leave their side without good reason.

亲爱我 孝何难

qīnàiwǒ xiàohénán

Our parents take care of us without complaint or regret. Therefore obeying our parents should be natural to us and should not be a problem.

親憎我 孝方賢

亲憎我 孝方贤

qīnzēngwǒ xiàofāngxián

When our parents don't like us or is too harsh in their disciplining, we should reflect and improve ourselves.

親有過 諫使更

亲有过 谏使更

qīnyǒuguò jiànshǐgēng

When our parents are wrong, we should try to correct them in a mild manner.

怡吾色 柔吾聲

怡吾色 柔吾声

yíwúsè róuwúshēng

When we correct them, we should do it with a smile and a soft voice instead of being direct and blaming. Otherwise we will have committed filial impiety.

You should always try to do what your parents like.

親所惡 謹為去

亲所恶 谨为去

qīnsuǒwù jǐnwèiqù

Likewise, you should always avoid doing what your parents don't like.

身有傷 貽親憂

身有伤 贻亲忧

shēnyǒushāng yíqīnyōu

You should take care of your health, avoid sickness or harm, so as not to let your parents worry.

德有傷 貽親羞

德有伤 贻亲羞

déyǒushāng yíqīnxiū

You should accept your role and your place in society. Don't do anything that is unethical, causes harm to society or bring shame to your parents.

shìsuīxiǎo wùshànwéi

You should tell your parents everything, even little things and not do as you wish without consulting them.

苟擅為 子道虧

苟擅为 子道亏

gǒushànwéi zǐdàokuī

If you do what you like and make them worry, you will have violated your duty as a son or daughter.

物雖小 勿私藏

物虽小 勿私藏

wùsuīxiǎo wùsīcáng

Even though public object might be small, I will not keep it myself.

苟私藏 親心傷

苟私藏 亲心伤

gǒusīcáng qīnxīnshāng

Hiding things is the same as stealing, and this will make your parents feel sad and shameful.

In the winter you should make sure your parents stay warm, while in the summer you should make sure your parents stay cool.

chénzéxǐng hūnzédìng

You should say good morning to your parents after you wake up, and after you return home, you should tell your parents what happened while you were out, so as not to let them worry.

出必告 反必面

出必告 反必面

chūbìgào fǎnbìmiàn

When you go out, you should let your parents know where you are going. When you come home, you should let them know you're back, so as not to let them worry.

居有常 業無變

居有常 业无变

jūyǒucháng yèwúbiàn

Don't change the place where you live or the job you have often, so as not to let your parents worry.

When our parents lecture us, we must take their words to heart.

Fùmǔ zé xū shùn chéng

When our parents reproach us, we must follow their wishes.

First, you must obey your parents, respect your older siblings, love your younger siblings, be careful in your speech, and keep your promise to others.

泛愛衆          而親仁

fàn ài zhòng    ér qīn rén 

You should have a generous love towards others, and try to befriend people with good manners.

有餘力          則學文

有余力          则学文

yǒu yú lì         zé xué wén

If you can do the above and still have energy left, you can proceed to study literature and other knowledge.
